Ask a producer about a decision, not just a passion
A focused interview framework for stories with detail and substance.
Choose a specific moment
Ask about the current season, a recent change or one product. A broad question about passion often produces a broad answer. A question about why a particular decision was made invites an explanation that the reader can follow.
Explore alternatives
What else could the producer have done? Which constraint mattered most? What was gained or given up? These questions reveal judgement without assuming that every choice was easy or every result was successful. Keep technical terms in the contributor’s own language, then ask for a plain explanation.
Ask what can be shown
A tool, sample, notebook or stage of preparation can make the process visible. Seek permission before photographing it and check whether any commercial information needs to stay private. Do not infer a technical claim from an image; ask the producer to explain what it shows.
Verify claims and quotations
Keep a source record for names, dates, production details and environmental claims. Distinguish the producer’s opinion from a fact that requires supporting evidence. Read back uncertain terminology and confirm quotes against the recording or notes. Avoid adding invented sensory descriptions to a product you have not experienced.
Give the reader a next step
Link to the producer’s official information and explain where readers can find current visiting or ordering details. Disclose any payment, gifted product or ownership relationship connected to the story. A useful profile can be warm without pretending to be independent of its circumstances.
